Located in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho is the fourth-largest city in Vietnam. In December 2021, Interceptor 003 conducted its first waste extraction in the Can Tho River, which runs through the city center and feeds into the Bassac River (locally known as the Hậu River). The unique conditions of this location, such as the heavy boat traffic and varying currents, will help us to trial the design in exceptional situations and better understand the technology while the river program is in the Validation Phase. Many stakeholders have been instrumental in the deployment of Interceptor 003. The Ocean Cleanup partnered with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho, while the DRAGON Institute – Mekong –CTU has helped to conduct field research. The Dutch Embassy in Hanoi and Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City introduced us to the relevant Vietnamese government authorities. They have supported this project by attending meetings with authorities and by streamlining the process through diplomatic means.
